what is a line?, how long is a piece of string?
This poster emerged from an initial idea I had to do with line. As I was doodling I thought about producing letterforms, images with just one line, 'continuous line' drawings. I had thought about instead of using a pen or pencil, creating an image/letterform by using another type of continuous line, string. I ended up straying from this idea because I started producing the zoetrope, however I really felt like producing a poster. 'How long is a piece of string?', not only relates to the material I used on the poster itself, but also relates to how I feel about the statement/question, 'what is a line?' A line is in everything, it is found everywhere and can relate to everything, I found this out through the use of my small sketchbook I made using photographs from a disposable camera capturing lines everywhere. In my opinion there is no right/definite answer for 'what is a line?', just like, 'how long is a piece of string?'. I produced this by using tiny blobs of strong glue and sticking the right bits of string down in order for it to follow the right path to eventually spell out 'how long is a piece of string?'.
